The Henry Jackson Society has today welcomed the publication by the Defence Select Committee of their report On Thin Ice: UK Defence in the Arctic.
Dr Andrew Foxall, Director of the Russia & Eurasia Studies Centre at the Henry Jackson Society, who gave evidence to the Committee and is cited in their report, said:
“Russia has spent the last decade intensively militarising the Arctic. It has made considerable investments to improve its capacity and capabilities in the region, including establishing new Arctic brigades, re-opening Soviet-era military bases and building new facilities.
“This has far outstripped Western efforts over the same period and has left the West vulnerable.
“In so far as Russia’s actions threaten the international system, it seems clear that greater dangers lie ahead, for both the UK and the West, if Russia’s militarisation of the Arctic goes unchecked.”
