The Henry Jackson Society today commented on the news that President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un will meet by May this year.

South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong announced the proposal for the meeting at the White House and also said that North Korea was “committed to denuclearisation”.

Dr Alan Mendoza, Executive Director of The Henry Jackson Society, said:

“President Trump’s approach to diplomacy has certainly been unconventional. But there can be little doubt that it has been his forceful interventions in the Korean peninsula that have jolted the Kim regime into a response.

“The lesson is clear: maximum pressure on authoritarian states flouting international norms works.”
