Death at the Stadium

The explosion at the VIP stand in Grozny’s Dinamo stadium occurred at 10.35 on 9 May 2004, after the official part of the Victory Day celebrations was over.

Those killed included the head of Chechnya, Akhmat Kadyrov; the chairman of the Chechen State Council, Husein Isaev; two guards; a local journalist and an 8-year girl.

More than 60 other people were injured, including Colonel General Valeriy Baranov, commander of the Joint Group of Forces in the North Caucasus, who was next to Kadyrov. He was seriously injured and had his left leg amputated in hospital.
