SUMMARY:The Sectarian Threat to British Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-conversation event with Lord Walney\, a leading voice on Islamist extremism. \nWe will present rigorous analysis of a new form of sectarian politics that is taking shape ahead of May’s local elections. Our latest paper\, Forecasting the Muslim Sectarian Wave\, applies ward-level modelling of the 2024 English local elections to identify the local conditions most strongly associated with the success of candidates campaigning on Muslim communal grievance\, foreign policy flashpoints\, and transnational causes rather than conventional local issues. \nAs Britain heads to the polls\, this event asks a simple question: are our political institutions prepared for what is coming? \nThis event is online only. Sign up here. \n  \n \nEmma Schubart \nResearch Fellow\, Henry Jackson Society \n  \n \nLord Walney \nHouse of Lords \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:AI and the Labour Market
DESCRIPTION:As artificial intelligence accelerates at a pace few anticipated\, questions about the future of work are no longer abstract; they are immediate and deeply personal. From tech to finance\, industries are beginning to restructure around automation\, with high-profile decisions\, such as Jack Dorsey’s move to cut thousands of roles at Block\, signalling a shift in how companies value human versus machine labour. When tasks once performed by skilled employees can be executed faster and more efficiently by AI\, the line between augmentation and replacement becomes increasingly blurred. \nBut what happens next? And is AI really as good as we now seem to think it is – that is\, can it really replace human labour\, or is human verification still key? How should AI be introduced into the workforce\, gradually and with safeguards\, or as rapidly as innovation allows? Who bears responsibility for workers displaced by automation: companies\, governments\, or individuals themselves? What does meaningful reskilling actually look like at scale\, and can it keep pace with technological change? And perhaps most fundamentally\, if AI can perform a growing share of human work\, how do we redefine the purpose\, value\, and security of employment in the years ahead? \nThis event is online only. Sign up here. \n  \n  \n \nDr Helena Ivanov \nAssociate Researcher at the Henry Jackson Society \n  \n \nJonathan Boakes \nManaging Director at Infinum \n  \n \nDr Nandita Balakrishnan \nDirector for Intelligence at SCSP \n  \n \nLord Tim Clement-Jones \nHouse of Lords \n  \n

SUMMARY:The 2026 Strait of Hormuz Crisis: Navigating Global Disruption
DESCRIPTION:The strangulation of the Strait of Hormuz\, first by Iranian threats to global shipping and now by a US blockade\, has closed the world’s most vital energy artery and sent shockwaves through international markets\, driving energy prices ever higher. Although international plans are underway to find a path to reopening the Strait\, possibly through a convoy system\, Iran’s actions in weaponising the Hormuz factor mean a longer-term solution now needs to be back on the table. \n  By analysing the intersection of naval strategy and global economic resilience\, we will explore the path toward a secure maritime future where the world’s energy supply is no longer held hostage by an Iranian regime committed to fostering regional volatility. \nThis event is online only. SUMMARY:Online Event: AI and disinformation: What’s next?
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be online. To register for the zoom session\, please CLICK HERE. \nArtificial intelligence is transforming the way information is created\, shared\, and consumed – and with it\, the threat landscape for democracies worldwide. 2025 has seen the rapid rise of AI-driven disinformation\, from deepfakes to synthetic news\, deployed by both state and non-state actors to manipulate public opinion and undermine trust. This session will examine the most striking examples of AI-enabled disinformation over the past year\, explore how governments\, tech companies\, and civil society have responded\, and assess the risks that lie ahead. With elections\, conflicts\, and global rivalries on the horizon\, the discussion will ask: how prepared are we for an age in which truth itself can be manufactured at scale and what does this mean for the future of democracies? \n \n\nSam Stockwell \n\nSam Stockwell is Research Associate at the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS)\, which sits within The Alan Turing Institute. His research focuses on how AI is affecting the online information ecosystem\, particularly in relation to mis/disinformation\, moderating harmful content\, and election interference. He also conducts research on challenging issues at the intersection of privacy and safety trade-offs\, such as the use of biometrics in law enforcement and lawful access proposals for criminal investigations on end-to-end encrypted networks. \n \nZach Ward-Elms \nZach Ward-Elms is a pollster and campaign strategist at Sancrox Political Advisory. He has worked on over a dozen election campaigns\, including as Director of Research and Messaging for the New Zealand National Party during their 2023 landslide election victory. \n \nDr Helena Ivanov \nDr Helena Ivanov is an associate research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society.  She recently completed a PhD in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research focuses on the relationship between propaganda and violence against civilians. In her thesis\, Helena examined the role propaganda played during the Yugoslav Wars and produced a model for studying propaganda which details the key phases\, functions\, discourses\, and techniques of propaganda (the model itself is applicable to other contexts). Additionally\, Helena also served as a Manager at the Centre for International Studies at the LSE. Prior to her PhD\, Helena completed an MPhil in Political Theory at the University of Oxford\, and holds a BA in Politics from the University of Belgrade.

SUMMARY:Online Event: Israel’s Strategic Vulnerability
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be online. To register for the zoom session\, please CLICK HERE. \nSince October 7th\, Israel’s shift in doctrine to pre-empting military threats has led to it successfully target the leadership of Hamas\, Houthis\,  IRGC\, and Hezbollah\, as well as Iran’s nuclear and missile sites. By projecting power further and more frequently across the Middle East\, Israel has completely recast the regional landscape. \nDuring this online event we will discuss whether this shift presents Israel with a further set of strategic challenges making it vulnerable despite its regional strength growing. Egypt’s military has assumed a hostile military posture towards Israel\, while Turkey seeks to flex its muscle in opposition to Israel. Hamas retains the capabilities to recruit new members and reestablish tunnels while Hezbollah seeks to reconstitute itself. Iran still possesses a significant missile capability\, and it is a matter of time till there is another military confrontation between Israel and Iran. After Israel’s attempted targeting of Hamas’s leaders in Qatar\, regional risk increased as Saudi Arabia imported out of area actors signing a mutual defence pact with Pakistan. Furthermore\, regional tensions can escalate into geopolitical risk as GCC states increasingly foster ties with both Russia and China. Accompanying Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation in the international community are the many strategic challenges which Israel must prioritise and address if it is to ensure its continued security and prosperity. \nJoin HJS Senior Research Fellow Barak Seener as he moderates this distinguished panel where he is joined by\, Brigadier General (ret.) Amir Avivi\, Brigadier General (ret.) Yossi Kuperwasser\, Dr. Harold Rhode\, Dr. David Wurmser and Maj. Gen. (ret.) Dr. Wurmser was the senior advisor from 2003-2007 to the U.S. Vice President (Richard Cheney) on Middle East\, proliferation and strategic affairs. Prior to this\, Dr. Wurmser was the senior advisor to Under Secretary of State John Bolton at the State Department. His diplomatic missions included participating in sensitive high-level strategic discussions with Israel and Jordan\, coordinating with foreign governments on Iran policy\, participating on the United States negotiating team at several Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty meetings and conferences\, and helping negotiate base rights in key countries (Qatar) prior to the 2003 Iraq War. \n \nMaj. Gen. (ret.) Amos Yadlin \nMaj. Gen. (ret.) SUMMARY:Report Launch: How Russia Has Used Farmers' Protests As A Trojan Horse
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be held online. To register for the event\, please CLICK HERE. \nEuropean farmers’ protests have swept across the continent\, with demonstrations taking place from Brussels to Bratislava. They have attracted the interest of legislators and captured the attention of the public. While the reasons for these protests are perfectly legitimate\, drawing to light the plight of rural communities\, they have also attracted the unwanted attention of Russia – which seeks to use such demonstrations to spread anti-Ukrainian sentiment and drive societal division. \nJoin the Henry Jackson Society for the launch of our new report on Russia’s influence on the farmers’ protests\, exploring how the protests have been exploited in some cases in Central and Eastern Europe to disrupt recent elections\, including through the spread of anti-Ukrainian disinformation. And learn what can be done to help counter the spread of fake news. \n  \n\n\n\nEdward Lucas \nEdward Lucas’s expertise  includes energy\, cyber-security\, espionage\, information warfare and Russian foreign and security policy.  He is an acclaimed author and versatile speaker at high-level international events. \nFormerly a senior editor at The Economist\, the world’s foremost newsweekly\, he is a senior (non-resident) adviser at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA)\, a thinktank based in Washington\, DC. SUMMARY:In-Conversation With Prof Jeffrey Sachs: The Axis of Upheaval: On the Brink of a New World Order
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be online. To register for the zoom session\, please CLICK HERE. \nThe recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit brought together China\, North Korea\, Russia\, and India who pledged to work towards an alternative to the US-led international order. China used the occasion to showcase its growing military capabilities. Is the global south picking up momentum in challenging the international order? What are the growing strategic ties between these states? While these states are united in challenging US primacy\, does the US have a strategy in exploiting the cracks in strategic interests that exist between these states? Alternatively does the growing economic rise of China make the eclipse of the US inevitable on the international scene? Will this lead to China taking the dominant place in the international system or will it lead to multipolarity? \n \nProf. Jeffrey D. Sachs \nJeffrey D. Sachs is University Professor and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University\, where he directed the Earth Institute from 2002 until 2016. SUMMARY:Report Launch: A UK Strategy for Deterrence and Supply Chain Resilience in the Indo-Pacific
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be online. To register for the zoom session\, please CLICK HERE. \nAs the United Kingdom confronts the realities of a post-globalization era and intensifying great power competition\, the Henry Jackson Society is pleased to announce the release of a new report\, A UK Strategy for Deterrence and Supply Chain Resilience in the Indo-Pacific\, by Associate Fellow Darren G. Spinck. \nThis report argues that London must recalibrate its Indo-Pacific strategy with greater urgency – integrating military strength\, economic resilience\, and diplomatic credibility – to safeguard sovereignty and maintain relevance in a multipolar world. From modernizing naval capacity and countering Beijing’s coercive control of critical mineral supply chains\, to engaging in new transit corridors such as the Middle Corridor\, Spinck outlines a blueprint for how the UK can adapt to shifting geopolitical conditions. At a time when Washington and Brussels are realigning their approaches to China\, the paper warns that continued ambiguity risks isolating Britain from its closest allies and diminishing its influence in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. \n \nLuke de Pulford \nLuke de Pulford is the founder and Executive Director of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC)\, which comprises more than 250 members from 44 legislatures to push for democratic countries to reform policy on China. He previously co-founded the anti-slavery charity Arise\, which he ran from its inception until 2022. \n \nDarren Spinck \nDarren Spinck is an Associate Fellow at HJS. Darren is managing partner of Washington Consulting Solutions\, a full-service public affairs agency.  In his role at Washington Consulting Solutions\, Mr. Spinck focuses on policy analysis\, strategic message development\, and public advocacy programs for international clients seeking support with public diplomacy\, reputation management\, and crisis communications. \n  \n \nIan Williams\nIan Williams was foreign correspondent for Channel 4 News\, based in Russia (1992–1995) and then Asia (1995–2006). He then joined NBC News as Asia Correspondent (2006–2015)\, when he was based in Bangkok and Beijing. As well as reporting from China over the last 25 years\, he has also covered conflicts in the Balkans\, the Middle East and Ukraine. He won an Emmy and BAFTA awards for his discovery and reporting on the Serb detention camps during the war in Bosnia. He is currently a doctoral student in the War Studies department at King’s College\, London\, focusing on cyber issues.

SUMMARY:Online Event: In-Conversation with Dr Anshu Roy: AI and International security
DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be online. To register for the zoom session\, please CLICK HERE. \nArtificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the landscape of national security. From predicting threats and detecting vulnerabilities to transforming military decision-making\, AI is no longer a futuristic tool but an operational necessity. Governments and defence institutions around the world are racing to harness its potential\, while grappling with the risks of adversaries doing the same. The question is no longer whether AI will transform security\, but how – and who will lead transformation. \nThe Henry Jackson Society is honoured to host Dr. Anshu Roy\, Founder and CEO of Rhombus Power\, whose groundbreaking work is reshaping defence and national security decision-making. Under his leadership\, Rhombus has demonstrated an unprecedented ability to anticipate global events – most notably\, predicting the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the exact day. This level of precision has earned Rhombus the trust of senior U.S. government leaders\, international partners\, and the U.S. Air Force\, where its predictive tools have saved billions. \nA physicist by training\, with a PhD from the University of Michigan and early collaborations with a Nobel Laureate\, Dr. Roy has journeyed from inventing particle detection systems for the Fukushima cleanup to building one of the world’s most advanced AI-powered predictive platforms. This event offers a rare opportunity to hear from a pioneer whose technology is not only informing but redefining the future of national security. \n \nDr Anshu Roy \nDr. Anshu Roy is the Founder and CEO of Rhombus Power\, a company transforming defense and national security decision-making through its AI-powered\, predictive decision-support platform.
