UK envoy’s dressing down of Australian MPs weakens relationship

If the first job of a diplomat is to make friends and influence people, Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office has had a rotten spate of luck. Last July, the leaking of the regular private diplomatic cables sent from Britain’s ambassador to the United States, Kim Darroch, to London marred the US/UK relationship. In secret, albeit routine, “DipTels”, the British ambassador had described the notoriously thin-skinned President Trump as “inept”, “incompetent” and potentially indebted to “dodgy Russians”.
