At first glance, it would seem that accessing the darknet is child’s play.
In 2014, a 16-year-old girl radicalised herself in just seven months using content she found on the darknet. This culminated in her attempting to fly to Syria to join Islamic State, something she was only prevented from doing at the last minute by SO15 Counter Terrorism Command, who stopped her from boarding the plane.
The girl took steps to hide her online presence: she cleared her data and browsing history with a CC cleaner and used a 16-digit alphanumeric password. She described herself as ‘addicted’ to Islamic State material – and numb to images of brutality and death.
