Honor-based violence, also known by its abbreviation HBV, continues to be an issue deserving of greater attention.
The hindrances in eliminating HBV are twofold. The first is a lack of accurate statistics to understand the scale of the problem. The second is a lack of successful prosecutions–in fact, those responsible for HBV often escape justice by fleeing to countries outside of the U.K., thus avoiding extradition for their crimes.
In 2019, we are still unsure how many individuals are affected by HBV, on either a national or an international scale. The Honor Based Violence Awareness Network, for example, reports that 5,000 honor killings occur internationally every year, and 12 of these occur on average within the United Kingdom.
