Last week, towards the end of his journey, Trump visited Belgium.
Like its neighbour France, the city has been besieged by Islamist terror attacks that have intensified in recent years. The President’s trip focused on the involvement of the United States in NATO, an alliance that Trump has repeatedly threatened to leave. During his meetings with officials from 28 NATO countries, it is likely Trump used the threats of extremism and terrorism in Europe to argue that more resources are dedicated to defence and security infrastructure.
This argument is inevitable – but it is also limited. The risk of terrorist activity cannot be reduced without more support for, and by, local communities focused on combatting extremism.
