James Rogers, the think tank’s chief analyst, said: “China is the biggest challenge to the United Kingdom’s position as the world’s second most-capable power.
“It is investing in research and development and industrial design and is rapidly expanding its defence budget. These components of Chinese national capability are coming together as the country emerges as one of the world’s two superpowers, alongside the United States – with advanced space and other strategic assets.”
Mr Rogers said that for Britain to maintain its position “and stay ahead in the global race” then the country “needs to prioritise and invest more in research and development and its armed forces”.
