It has been running in Britain for less than a year but almost 6,000 British organisations have already joined Amazon Smile.
Among them are substantial charities including the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK and the RSPCA, as well as thousands of much smaller groups, including some with dubious credentials.
In February the Henry Jackson Society published Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing: How Islamist extremists exploit the UK charitable sector. It identified charities that received millions of pounds from taxpayers in gift aid despite supporting “the spread of harmful, non-violent extremist views”.
