Matthew Henderson, director of the Asia Studies Centre at the Henry Jackson Society think-tank, said: ‘When dealing with Beijing, economics and politics go hand in hand, despite claims to the contrary from both sides.

‘Critics of the UK’s optimistic approach to China have long warned that the UK’s freedom to call out China’s human rights abuses is curtailed by our economic dependency. The promotion of Britain’s interests, both moral and economic, should be the only basis for our approach to dealing with Beijing.’
