THE HJS VIRTUAL EVENT SERIES: “Weaponising COVID-19: Far-Right Antisemitism in the UK and US”

11th June 2020 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

Event times are in BST.

While most look on a crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic with worry, and view it as a challenge to be overcome, there are dangerous, hate-filled actors who consider these troubling times to be a gift. A golden opportunity not to be wasted.

Far-right extremists – both abroad and closer to home – are exploiting COVID-19 to peddle unfounded antisemitic conspiracy theories and intensify forms of hatred towards Jewish people. Looking to take advantage of the uncertainties and insecurities brought on by this deadly virus, which we still know relatively little about, far-right organisations across the world feel they have been given a boost. This includes entities which are weaponising the coronavirus pandemic to incite antisemitic hatred and violence.

This moves onto the all-important question: what can be done from a policy perspective in the UK and the USA – and beyond – when it comes to combatting far-right antisemitism?

To discuss this very matter, the Henry Jackson Society is pleased to invite you for an event with expert analysis from Dr Sharon Nazarian, Gideon Falter and Dr Rakib Ehsan, following the recent launch of Dr Ehsan’s publication: Weaponising Covid-19: Far-Right Anti-Semitism in the United Kingdom and United States.

Please register via ZOOM. You will receive virtual login details once your attendance has been confirmed.

Dr Sharon Nazarian is the Senior Vice President of International Affairs at ADL. She spearheads ADL’s work fighting anti-Semitism and racial hatred globally, including in Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, and ADL’s Israel office. She is also President of the Y&S Nazarian Family Foundation and founder of the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Chair of its Advisory Board.

Gideon Falter is Chief Executive for the Campaign Against Antisemitism, a body which works to expose and counter antisemitism through education and zero-tolerance enforcement of the law. He was elected to lead Campaign Against Antisemitism in Autumn 2014. Gideon has spoken at the House of Commons and given evidence to the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee. His work for Campaign Against Antisemitism has been publicly praised by politicians such as former British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The Algemeiner awarded Gideon as one of the “top 100 people positively influencing Jewish life”, and the Simon Wiesenthal Center hailed him as a “Jewish hero who proves that there are still powerful ways to leverage democratic rules to serve justice and protect Jewish community”. The international Jewish fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi made Gideon an Honorary Brother for his services to fighting antisemitism.

Dr Rakib Ehsan is a Research Fellow in the Centre on Radicalisation & Terrorism, and the Centre on Social & Political Risk.

Rakib specialises in the socio-political behaviour and attitudes of British ethnic minorities, with a particular focus on the UK’s Bangladeshi and Pakistani ethnic groups.

He holds a  PhD in Political Science from Royal Holloway, University of London, and is a regular columnist for Spiked!
