The rise and expansion of Islamic State represents one of the most disturbing examples of the failure to effectively confront the threat from Islamist terror groups that have ravaged the Middle East in recent decades. Indeed, Islamic State is only the latest and most extreme incarnation of the kind of Jihadist non-state armies that Western policy has sought to combat, so far without definitive victory. The war against Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah, Al-Nusrah and Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis has been long and not only do these groups remain undefeated, but they have now been joined by the formidable force of Islamic State.

Western policy makers and military strategists are now confronted with the task of devising a new and fully comprehensive plan for turning back the tide of Islamist terrorism. Learning from past failings will be an essential part of coming to terms with the extent of the challenge we now face, as it becomes increasingly vital that past experience informs the approach we adopt for the future.

The Henry Jackson Society is pleased to invite you to a discussion with Dr David Kilcullen, who will provide a candid analysis of the western power’s failed strategy to deal with the rise of ISIS. He will also share his insider’s perspective of events that have led to the current state of affairs in the Middle East today.

To attend, please RSVP to rsvp@henryjacksonsociety.org – RSVPs must include your full name and any affiliations including for any guests you wish to bring. We will send a confirmation that will be required to attend the event.
