The Palestinian Authority is home to an ancient Christian Arab minority, who have a proud history stretching back 2,000 years. We are now however seeing seismic changes occurring within this community. Once a town where its residents could enjoy relative stability, Bethlehem has shrunk to a pale shadow of its former self. Everywhere, the Christian population is in demographic retreat, with migration to the West a common phenomenon. At the same time, the issue of minority rights flares up regularly with local clashes over schooling, property and religious issues. Life for many has become increasingly unpleasant.

What is the cause of this deteriorating situation? Is it the controversial presence of Israel in the region that should be held responsible? Is the phenomenon rooted in social and religious movements unconnected to the Israeli presence? What thoughts and opinions do the members of the rapidly decreasing Christian minority hold?

By kind invitation of David Amess MP, The Henry Jackson Society is pleased to invite you to a discussion with “Christy”, a Palestinian Christian living in the West Bank and Howard Stern, a professional negotiator and mediator. Christy and Howard will share their perspective on the current situation in the West Bank. Christy will shed light on what living in the West Bank is like for those who call it their home, and how that has changed during her lifetime, whilst Howard will highlight the challenges he has experienced during his efforts to help resolve the tensions that so far show no signs of receding.

Biographies

“Christy”, whose real name is protected for security reasons, is a Palestinian Christian university student in her twenties. She is from the West Bank and along with her family, has lived through the intifadas and an occupation of her home by Israeli soldiers, as well as having the security barrier built around her house. But having witnessed first-hand the endemic corruption, deception and rise of radical Islam in the Palestinian Authority, she now wants the world to know what really goes on behind the less scrutinised side of that barrier.

Howard Stern is an accredited negotiator and mediator working in conflict and dispute resolution. He seeks to help Palestinian Christians understand Israel’s existential position. He travels to Israel and the West Bank regularly to research and gather up-to-date information while engaging with various agencies and organisations in pursuit of possible solutions to the ongoing Arab-Israeli dispute.
