American politics has been roiled by the election of Donald Trump. A year since his election, Washington plays host to intense policy battles over contentious issues including immigration, tax policy, and healthcare. Whilst Republicans seek to agree on a conservative agenda for the country, the Democratic party finds itself increasingly divided between progressive elements, and those who seek to maintain the centrist approach that defined the Clinton and Obama administrations.
Nor has the turmoil escaped individual states. Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe faced a national crisis earlier this year with the Charlottesville violence, where an extremist murdered a protestor at the biggest gathering of the US Far Right in 40 years. Governor McAuliffe’s talk will touch upon all these themes, and offer a unique insight into the current state of American politics, given that it coincides with the week in which Virginians elect his successor as Governor – a contest that has gained national prominence due to the polarised nature of the campaign.
By kind invitation of the Rt. Hon. The Viscount Waverley, The Henry Jackson Society is delighted to invite you to an event with Terry McAuliffe, the incumbent Governor of Virginia, and a former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Governor McAuliffe will talk about the steps that the Democrats will need to take to rejuvenate their party at a time when Republicans dominate control the American politics at both the state and federal level. He will share insights gained from his lengthy career, which has also included stints as co-Chairman of the Bill Clinton’s 1996 re-election campaign, and Chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 Presidential campaign.
Terry McAuliffe is the 72nd Governor of Virginia. McAuliffe has severed as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee and he was the Chairman of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign bid. As Governor of Virginia, McAuliffe has made the economy his top priority. Since winning in the Governorship in 2014, McAuliffe has conducted 34 trade missions, including two to China, personally delivering Virginia’s calling card to business leaders around the globe. As a result, he is bringing thousands of jobs and more than $18.7 billion in capital investment to communities across the Commonwealth. Governor McAuliffe has challenged President Trump on the issues of immigration and healthcare reform.
