For over seven and a half years, Secretary Johnson played a crucial role in the evolution of the Obama administration’s defence policy. During the first term of the Obama administration, Mr Johnson served as General Counsel at the Department of Defense, acting as the Pentagon’s most senior lawyer at a time when the United States conducted a record number of drone strikes, sought to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, and initiated a military intervention in Libya. During President Obama’s second term Mr Johnson served as Secretary of Homeland Security, overseeing efforts to respond to the Ebola crisis, and pioneering management reforms which brought about a more centralised approach to budgeting, acquisition, and policy formation.

By kind invitation of Jack Lopresti MP, The Henry Jackson Society is delighted to invite you to an event with Secretary Jeh Johnson, Former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, who will reflect on his time in office and offer perspectives for the future of the security of both of our countries. Since leaving office, Secretary Johnson has been an active contributor to contemporary debates, maintaining that America’s response to international terrorism can be justified under both US and international law. He will discuss Washington’s current cybersecurity and counter-terrorism efforts, and how similar policy is playing out in other Western countries, offering a unique insight into the challenges and opportunities that define 21st century policy-making.
