The Syrian opposition, backed by Turkey, pushed the Islamic State out of al-Bab, its last important Syrian stronghold outside of its capital, Raqqa, on 23 February. Important as this victory was, even more important is the aftermath, which now pits Turkey and her allies against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in a contest for American support to be the party that liberates Raqqa City.
