Analysis: ‘The Fall of Al-Bab and the Road to Raqqa’

The Syrian opposition, backed by Turkey, pushed the Islamic State out of al-Bab, its last important Syrian stronghold outside of its capital, Raqqa, on 23 February. Important as this victory was, even more important is the aftermath, which now pits Turkey and her allies against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in a contest for American support to be the party that liberates Raqqa City.

A few days ago, building on work done here at The Henry Jackson Society, I wrote a full analysis for The International Business Times (IBT) of the possible options moving forward and the implications of these choices. Today I discussed this on the IBT podcast.
