NATO confirmation of 1,000 troops over border shows an invasion has occurred

In one of its most brazen displays of support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, Moscow has sent over 1,000 troops along with artillery and tanks across the border, opening up a new front around the town of Novoazovsk. Though denied by the Kremlin, these reports have been confirmed by both Ukrainian and NATO officials.

Orchestrating the start of the invasion on the same day as he met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in Minsk, Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again shown his complete lack of respect for international law and proven that Russia is willing to go as far as it takes to ensure Ukraine remains unstable.

The onus is now on the West to show that its previous sanctions were not just a token measure. The West must make clear that if his destabilisation of Ukraine continues it will result in the extension and widening of current sanctions and increased international isolation.

Dr Alan Mendoza, Director of The Henry Jackson Society, commented:

“We need to take a long, hard look at what is happening in Ukraine today – naked Russian aggression – and decide whether we wish to be party to it.

“Western leaders started down a process of sanctions against Russia owing to Mr Putin’s previous misbehaviour. These must be enhanced immediately and military and logistical support needs to be provided to the Ukrainian government.”
